Environment: competitive and sustainable framework for BLIC activities

Environmental protection is a broad and complex area in which rubber manufacturers have long been actively involved. Following a sustainable approach, tyre and general rubber goods manufacturers have undertaken actions whose aim parallels the objectives set out by the European Commission in key legislative documents.

Adopted in July 2002 the 6th Community Environment Action Programme (EAP) lays down environmental objectives and priorities, with targets and timetables, for a ten-year period.
Based on the “polluter-pays“ principle, the EAP promotes the integration of environmental concerns into all Community policies and encourages the achievement of sustainable development throughout the European Union.

Thematic Strategies are one component of the actions foreseen within the 6th EAP.
In 2005, consultation of stakeholders on two Thematic Strategies including on waste prevention and recycling has progressed.

In addition, since 2000, the achievement of the objectives of the Lisbon strategy governs the EU policy. Adopted by the EU15 Heads of States, this strategy aimed at making Europe the most competitive, dynamic, knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010.
Regarding environmental policy, the strategy puts particular emphasis on the relationship between environment and economy.
