The European Road Safety Charter

According to statistics, over 40,000 road traffic fatalities occur per annum and one out of three people will be injured in a traffic accident at some point in their lives.
The European Commission objective is therefore to halve the number of traffic deaths in the European Union between 2001 and 2010 i.e. saving 25,000 lives.

To this end, the Commission set up in 2004 the European Road Safety Charter open to all stakeholders (institutions, associations, companies) as the tool to:

  • take concrete measures to reducing the number of road deaths,
  • assess results and
  • further promote the need to reduce road fatalities.

By signing the European Road Safety Charter, the Association commits to assuming a share of the responsibility in helping to achieve the common target of saving 25,000 lives.

ETRMA signed to the European Road Safety Charter

To demonstrate its continuous involvement to enhance security of road users and the vehicles and consequently contributing to the EU objective of halving the number of road deaths and accidents, ETRMA has become signatory to the European Road Safety Charter in presence of EC Vice-President Jacques Barrot at the time of the Europe 1st Road Safety Day, i.e. 27 April 2007.

EC Commissioner for Transport Jacques Barrot and ETRMA sign up the European Road Safety Carter on the 1st European Road Safety Day (27 April 2007).

The ETRMA delegation is composed of (clockwize rotation) the Secretary General, Mrs Fazilet Cinaralp, the President, Francesco Gori, Eric de Cromières (Michelin), Ekkeherd Röhl (Continental), and Desmond Collins (Bridgestone Europe).

Strong commitments have been taken to initiate a wide programme of safety oriented education campaigns with tyre companies members’ employees and in Eastern Europe countries to inform of existing “best practices” from the national tyre safety campaigns being promoted in Western Europe.

The industry has also initiated various dedicated actions to increase knowledge of the features enhancing tyre safety, the necessity for vehicles to be equipped with winter tyres in winter conditions, and to respect the minimum tread depth as laid down in national regulations. These initiatives will target EU national authorities and insurance companies.

Finally, a wide communication campaign based on tyre safety demonstrations has also been launched with authorities and road users to demonstrate the benefits of driving with tyres at the right pressure at all times.
