The Tire Industry Project (TIP) publishes definitions for renewable and recycled material

30 July 2025

To advance the circular economy in the tyre value chain, shared understanding and standardised terminology are essential. The Tire Industry Project (TIP) has published a new reference document establishing definitions for two key concepts: renewable material and recycled material.

Developed in line with EU and international frameworks, the new definitions offer clear, actionable guidance to support consistency and transparency across the tyre sector. They are the result of a multi-year collaborative effort by TIP member companies, which together represent approximately 60% of global tyre production.

The document outlines:

  • A definition of renewable material based on biobased origin and replenishment rates;

  • Clear criteria for post-consumer and pre-consumer recycled material.

ETRMA supports the adoption of these definitions to ensure better alignment with broader industry and policy expectations.
